The bioscience sector of the economy is large, fast growing, diverse, and cross cutting. It involves a wide range of manufacturing, service, and research activities. The biosciences cluster consists mainly of those firms primarily engaged in biotechnology and life sciences R&D;, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and the manufacturing of analytical instruments and medical devices. Central Upstate New York has a significant base of bioscience companies, being 25% more concentrated in the biosciences than the nation. The largest subsector of the biosciences is medical devices, which account for 52% of employment in the biosciences sector. New York State has committed $20 million to Upstate Medical University and SUNY ESF to create a Central New York Biotechnology Center.
Welch Allyn, ConMed, and Sensis; three leading Central Upstate New York technology companies have united to form CNY MedTech, a forum for enhanced collaboration between Central Upstate New York medical manufacturers, researchers, and allied organizations. "The goal of CNY MedTech is to harness the combined strength of the region?s medical and medical-related technology companies, academic research institutions, economic development agencies, and professional service providers to materially improve opportunities for success and growth of our region's medical devices and bio-science companies" explains Welch Allyn President and CEO Peter Soderberg. This alliance is intended to provide opportunities for interaction and learning that will catalyze the emergence of Central Upstate New York as a vital hub of medical technology innovation and commercialization.
